the ambition of ghosts - double concerto for violin and viola, string orchestra, and radios
"The Ambition of Ghosts" is a double concerto for violin and viola, string orchestra, and radios that explores the intersection of technology and magic. It is inspired by the history of the radio as well as the cultural fascination with spiritual mediums and séances in the early twentieth century. The piece features rare recordings of Leslie Flint, a famous direct-voice medium, transmitted to several portable radios performed by the accompanying ensemble. Throughout the work, the performers are asked to explore the musical and metaphorical relationships between signal and noise. "The Ambition of Ghosts" celebrates nearly ten years of collaboration with andPlay, beginning with "Bezier" (2013) and "Apocrypha" (2017).
Performed by andPlay, Argus Quartet, The Rhythm Method, Tristan Kasten Krause, and Pat Swoboda, under a custom reflective installation by JR Roykovich.
